Waste Water Management (Wetland) - EHPEA

Waste Water Management (Wetland)

Waste management is one of a cross cutting issue for sustainable business climate of the horticulture sector. In line with this, EHPEA has been implementing waste water management by supporting the construction of Wetland System of farms in partnership with “The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) through the Floriculture Sustainable Initiative (FSI)”.

The main aim was to reduce environmental risks from discharge of untreated waste water, which will enable farms to reuse treated water for production and other purposes and benefit farms in terms of water saving. In addition, it is enhancing the capacity of farms and local experts on wetland technology. Similarly, on biomass management (composting) through EDPHD, EHEPA is working in adopting technologies (bio-energy) to improve green waste management practice and efficiency.

The first Partnership (2008-2012) became successful in supporting commercial horticulture farms operation in a socially and environmentally friendly manner through the development of the Code of Practice requirement and integration of environmentally viable pest management, the Integrated Pest Management which intensifies in consecutive phases.

During the second phase of the program (2013-2016) additional activities were incorporated, especially related to business development and investment promotion and the support for emerging commercial horticultural producers. Also, the work on IPM was intensified, aiming at the introduction of more biological pest control agents and the reduction of pesticide use. During this period EHPEA also expanded intervention areas incorporating Cross Cutting issues like gender, nutrition and sanitation and hygiene practices in the member commercial horticulture farms. At the same time this period saw a stagnation in new investments, while at the same time existing commercial horticulture farms expanded (roughly by 10% per year).

Moving forward, EHPEA sees the current partnership phase (2017-2021), as a crucial period in the development of the sector by which number of persistent bottlenecks for further growth need to be solved.
