A familiarization workshop was conducted on the “Horticulture Industry Effluent Discharge Limit (Standard)” today at the Hilton Hotel Addis Ababa.
The standard developed by Institute of Ethiopian Standard, through the continuous lobby and support of Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA).
The waste management standards provide the guides, practices, and test methods pertinent to the process of handling commercial wastes. This process involves the collection, transport, processing, and recycling or disposal (whichever is applicable) of waste materials for health, environmental, and/or aesthetic purposes.
The workshop was a great platform where the farms, responsible government offices and stakeholders reflected their comments to have a holistic concession on the standard.
On the workshop the farms stated the need of allocating time frame as a transition period to fully adopt the required standards, parameters and sampling frequency.
EHPEA, has been supporting its member farms to implement used water management & green waste management at their farms. Up to date 40 farms constructed a Wetland System and practicing biomass management (composting) in adopting bio-energy technologies to improve green waste management.
