The Ethiopian export horticulture development though young has been showing glittering success for more than one decade. It has managed to generate more than two billion US dollar so far to the country. In addition, it has created employment opportunity for nearly 200 thousand fellow Ethiopians. The knowledge transfer from the sector and the trickle-down effects have significantly contributed for the livelihood improvement of millions of Ethiopians as well.

It is recalled that after the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic the market for Ethiopia’s horticulture is hard hit and it posed gigantic challenge. Following that the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) has worked relentlessly to portray the gravity of the problem and also issued a proposal with recommendations to the government on measures that need to be taken to minimize the adverse impacts of COVID 19. Following that series of consultation were undertaken on the proposed recommendations. Accordingly, the government has given pragmatic and prudent decisions to support operators of the sector. The bold decisions includes, among others, injecting of liquidity to commercial banks so that they can avail additional working capital for the farms, rescheduling of loan payments and suspending of principal and interest payment, suspension of the hard currency repatriation threshold, development of COVID 19 Work Place Protocol and  the like. The Ethiopian Airlines has also shown its usual invaluable and irreplaceable solidarity to the industry by during the hard times.

As concerns increased on the spread of pandemic, EHPEA member farms are responding to the precaution advises against Corona virus by the National Ministry of Health guideline and regulations issued by World Health Organization (WHO). Each employee working in the farm regularly are being checked their temperature, doubled the capacity of transport service to avoid congestion, social distancing monitored by farm managers and the established COVID-19 team in each farm compound, masks, gloves and hand washing facilities provided, on top of the above good precaution practices awareness creation team established the necessary basic prevention and control mechanisms are delivered.

EHPEA would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the government for its swift and prudent decisions to support the industry at this challenging time.

We would like also to express our readiness to work for the further mushrooming of the industry.
