EHPEA in collaboration with Oromia Water and Energy Bureau hosted a familiarization workshop yesterday at Bishoftu Pyramid Hotel on the Proclamation to Establish Oromia Region Water Resources Development Fund, Number 233/2021 and Regulation No. 236/2015 E.C to implement the proclamation.
During the session officials of Oromia Water and Energy Bureau explained about the rationals that institute the proclamation and the regulation.
According to them, it is found necessary to develop, nurture and maintain the water resource of the region, to prevent the draining and pollution of water resource and thereby make it to be used sustainably and safeguard the interests of the future generation. To this end the fund is established, they mentioned.
During the session implementation challenges particularly the fee requested by some town offices and other challenges were raised and direction is set to address wrong interpretations of the proclamation and the regulation.
During the session horticulture farms drawn from different clusters, representatives of Minstry of Agriculture, various municipalities water and energy office heads and officials of the Water and Energy Burea were in attendance.
The Ethiopian horticulture export industry has taken bold measures to reduce the water foot print of the industry. Accordingly, 43 used water treatment plants are constructed and many more are under construction to reuse, recycle and reduce treated water. On the basis of EHPEA’s request, a National Horticulture Effluent is also developed and enacted.
On top of that EHPEA has been undertaking series of capacity building interventions on designing and maintaining used water treatment plants.
