EHPEA held a media tour at its member farms Red Fox Ethiopia Plc. and Joytech Plc., located in the Koka and Bishoftu horticulture cluster today.

The Association organized this event with an aim to raise awareness about the latest advancements in the Ethiopian horticulture.

Participants from the local media outlets TV, Radio and Newspaper gained valuable insights into the cutting-edge techniques for cut flower production, banana tissue culture production, and hydroponics technology being implemented at the farm level.

On the event Selamawit Kassa, the State Minister of Government Communication Services stated the readiness of her office to collaborate with the Association to host different platforms to improve the sector image globally.

Batu (Ziway) Horticulture Cluster Hosted Successful Experience Sharing Program on FCM Management.

Ziway Roses Plc. welcomed EHPEA member farms to learn about their best practices for identification and management of False Codling Moth (FCM) at the farm level.

The Association organized the 1st round of the ‘Experience Sharing Program’ to transfer practical knowledge and help farms combat the effects of FCM for a sustainable floriculture business in Ethiopia.

Farm managers, crop protection experts, and representatives from the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority (EAA) participated in the program.

Attendees engaged in fruitful discussions, sharing diverse experiences and strategies for FCM management. The program is set to continue tomorrow at Herburg Rose Ethiopia, featuring additional innovative methods for combating FCM.”

EHPEA TVET Center conducted ‘Advanced Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management System’ training for its member farms at its head Office. 

The program emphasized the enhancement of workplace safety culture, improvement of risk management practices, and the safeguarding of farm communities. A significant component of the training involved experience sharing visit to exemplary farms, where participants exchanges their best practices.

Following the training, the attendees engaged in discussions about future directions and implementation strategies.

A validation workshop took place on national standard for Horticulture products

The government’s voucher duty incentive scheme helps domestic products competitiveness in the international market.

A validation workshop which took place recently addressed a long-standing challenge: the lack of a national standard for input-output coefficients for Horticulture products.

Representatives from the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association, and horticulture farms participated to validate the draft directive.

The workshop discussed:

The legal framework for the scheme

Issuing beneficiary certificates

Draft input-output coefficients

Farm representatives shared their concerns about implementing the new directive.

The Ministry of Industry committed to consider those comments forwarded by the participants and to finalize the directive by the end of June 2024.

This is a positive step towards a more efficient and transparent voucher duty scheme!

EHPEA TVET center conducted environmental sustainability training for its member farms, focusing on environmental sustainability and circular economy principles which enables horticulture farms to convert their used inputs into valuable assets. Experience sharing visit to model farms has been also part of the training to have a real-time exposure for the trainees.

EHPEA in collaboration with Trade Mark Africa, inked a joint agreement to develop a comprehensive e-learning and knowledge management systems

The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA), in collaboration with Trade Mark Africa, inked a joint agreement to develop a comprehensive e-learning and knowledge management systems tailored to the increasing needs of Ethiopia’s horticulture sector today at Skylight Hotel.

The project, funded by the European Union (EU) through the Agence Française de Développement (AfD), with a grant of ETB 8.15 million (€139k).

The Association has been relentlessly working to elevate the capacity of commercial farms through its accredited TVET Center to date.

On the signing ceremony it was stated that realizing the full potential of the E-learning and Knowledge Management Systems in the sector requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders. Industry players, including growers, exporters, and logistics providers, must embrace digital transformation and invest in technology infrastructure and capacity building.

This project will leverage interested individuals to be equipped with advanced tools to boost their productivity and market competitiveness globally.

This isn’t just a Mother’s Day win – Ethiopia’s flower industry is flourishing! The horticulture sector is a key player in the country’s economy, generating over $658 million last year.
Next to Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day is the most important event of the year for the flower industry, accounting for a significant spike in flower demand.

The EHPEA TVET center provided advanced training on a Compliance and Sustainability for its member farms. The training primarily emphasized current compliance issues, understanding the EHPEA code, and other international market standards with experience sharing program on farm among participants.

This comprehensive training aims to enhance compliance practices and promote sustainable production approaches within the Ethiopian Horticulture sector.

Exciting Milestone achieved in Sidama Region

In a significant development for the Horticulture sector, a high-profile meeting was convened to address the establishment of the Sidama National Regional State Horticulture Investment and Export Promotion Taskforce. This gathering brought together higher government officials of Sidama Regional State to deliberate on strategies for advancing horticulture investment and export promotion initiatives within the region.

Moreover, the meeting concluded with a landmark moment as representatives from various governmental bodies came together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This document solidifies commitments and outlines collaborative efforts to propel the horticulture sector to new heights.
