Ethiopian Airlines shipping Valentine’s flowers from Ethiopia to international markets

In the lead up to February 14th, Ethiopian Airlines is shipping Valentine’s flowers from the country to different international market destinations.

As the major player in horticulture value chain which requires smart and efficient agro-logistics set up, the Ethiopian Airlines is actively collaborating with the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association – EHPEA and flower farms in exporting thousands of tons of flowers for the annual Valentine’s season.

The Airline is heavily engaged every year with increased freighter flights in transporting Ethiopia’s premium flowers for Valentine’s Day uplifting primarily from Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar to international destinations of Europe, U.S.A, UK, Middle East, Asia and African markets.

Flower accounted 80% of Ethiopia’s horticulture export revenue of 564.89 millions U.S. dollars in the previous fiscal year (2024/25). Ethiopian Airlines shipped approximately 4200 tons of Valentine’s flowers in 2025.

EHPEA Executive Director Tewodros Zewdie commends the Ethiopian Airlines for its indispensable role in the export of Ethiopia’s high-value horticulture with quality service reinforced by high-tech cold chain facilities, cargo freighters and staff of high standard professionalism. “All management and staff of Ethiopian cargo are known for being epitome of professionalism,” he underscores.

Stating that it is an exemplary partnership wherein Ethiopian Airlines demonstrates unwavering solidarity to the industry, the Executive Director says, “It can be dubbed as a symbiotic relationship between Ethiopian Airlines Group and the horticulture export industry that expedited the development of the industry from Grass to Grace.”

As part of the on-going efforts to strengthening partnership between the Ethiopian Airlines and the horticulture industry, EHPEA has recently facilitated site visits for a team from the Cargo Service to some farms in Bishoftu town. `

The visit helps in showcasing sustainable high-tech farming practices, advanced packaging and on-site cold storage systems, while fostering exchanges, partnerships, and a shared commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s growing horticulture export sector.

Such tours allow ET Cargo Service staff to have first-hand insights into the peculiar characteristics of the industry and the meticulous farming and post-harvest activities carried out by ensuring flawless operations for high quality export, says EHPEA Executive Director, adding, “Visit programs help to co-innovate joint interventions and solutions to create a win-win scenario for the airline and the industry.”

The tours embrace the high-tech driven JoyTech and Yasin Legesse Farms

JoyTech Chief Operating Officer Bisrat Haileselassie and Yasin Legesse Farm Manager Atire Zewdie hail the field visits by Ethiopia cargo staff as it helps in showcasing farms’ meticulous and arduous operation on crop production, post-harvest handling, including advanced packaging and high-tech cold storage facilities.

It also allows face-to-face interaction with Cargo staff to communicate the Farm’s on-site workload and needs, particularly issues related to space for shipment, while fostering collaboration and long-term mutual benefits as it enables joint interventions of addressing issues related to logistics, maintaining product quality and export efficiency, according to the representatives of the Farms.

Such direct engagement and communication between EHPEA members and the Airlines is crucial for managing the tight, time-sensitive nature of perishable cargo, thereby enhancing supply chain efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring high-quality product export, says Bethlehem Abel, Global Cargo Sales and Services Director at Ethiopian Airlines.

“መጪው ጊዜ የሆርቲካልቸር ነው፡፡” በሚል መሪ ቃል ለ10ኛ ጊዜ በኢትዮጵያ የአበባ፣ አትክልትና ፍራፍሬ አምራችና ላኪዎች ማኅበር በአዲስ ዓለምአቀፍ ኮንቬንሽን ሴንተር ከመጋቢት 15 እስከ 17 ቀን 2018 ዓ.ም. በሚካሄደው የግብርናው ንዑስ ዘርፍ ልዩ የንግድ ትርዒት ላይ ለመሳተፍ እስከ አሁን ድረስ ከ100 በላይ የኤግዚቢሽን አቅራቢዎች ተመዝግበዋል፡፡

የውጭ ሀገር የዘርፉ ተዋንያን በሁነቱ ላይ ለመሳተፍ የሚያሳዩት ፍላጎት በሀገራችን ማኅበረሰብንና አካባቢን በሚገባ ታሳቢ በማድረግ፤ በዘላቂ ልማት መርሆች የሚዘወረው የሆርቲካልቸር ዘርፍ ፈጣን እድገት በዓለምአቀፍ ደረጃ እውቅናን እያገኘ መምጣቱን የሚያመላክትና በዘርፉ ስኬታማነትና አዋጭነት ላይ ያላቻውን እምነት የሚያሳይ ነው፡፡

ይህም እውነታ ለበለጠ ውጤት እንዲሁም መጪውን ጊዜ በዘርፉ ስኬት ለማድመቅ ለአበባ አምራችና ላኪዎች ማኅበር እና ለሌሎች የሀገራችን ባለድርሻ አካላት ኃይል የሚሆን ግባት ነው፡፡

EHPEA hails success through joint efforts in combating FCM

The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) member farms in Ziwayi cluster has extolled the collective efforts employed by key stakeholders to the success in combating False Codling Moth (FCM), which was a major threat to Ethiopia’s floriculture production and export performance.

EHPEA has been actively engaged in managing FCM through specialized teams, trainings and protocols and science-based system approach.

An event was held on Thursday to recognize individuals from different institutions, who have played a significant role in achieving milestones in the fight against FCM, a threat to Ethiopia’s floriculture continued success and export growth.

On the occasion, EHPEA Executive Director Tewodros Zewdie highlighted the extensive collaborative efforts undertaken by EHPEA, the Ethiopian Agriculture Authority (EAA), farms, and partners, including among others, Embassy of the Kingdome of the Netherlands (EKN), Trade Mark Africa, Union Fleurs- International Flower Trade Association, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Products Safety Authority (NVWA), CBI and COLEAD.

He also reiterated that respective measures were taken at national, farm and EHPEA levels in the process involving team formation, conducting overseas study tour, awareness raising sessions and massive training as well as designing and implementing protocol and science-based system approach.

Highlighting that best practices from Kenya were successfully adopted and implemented in the country to tackle the problem, the Executive Director commended all stakeholders and partners for their significant contributions in safeguarding the floriculture from such devastating pest.

Handing over certificates to individual professionals who played active role in the process, EAA Deputy Director Wondale Habtamu (PhD) noted that the dedicated efforts and collaboration demonstrated in tackling FCM serve as valuable lesson and a model of best practices for other sectors to emulate when addressing such challenges that threaten development and growth.

He also stated the rigorous journeys made throughout the process by collaborating with key partners and stakeholders towards the success which safeguards the sector and keeps the smooth production and export of Ethiopia’s horticulture products.

Reminding the need to say vigilant, the Deputy Director emphasized the importance of strengthening such impactful coordinated efforts and fostering dedicated collaboration among partners within the sub-sector and beyond to prevent potential infestations by FCM and other pests.

EHPEA Board Member, Lulit Tadele emphasized that this big achievement represents a national success story, even though various individuals and institutions played a role in the process.

She emphasized that achieving such recognition and even the possibility of export would not have been feasible without the dedicated efforts in combating the issue. She praised all those involved for contributing to the success of the country’s promising sector.

EHPEA Holds Consultative Meeting With Ethiopian Customs Commission

Board Members of EHPEA and members held a constructive consultative meeting with H.E Ato Debele Kabeta, Commissioner and Ato Ezezew Chane, Deputy Commissioner and senior management of Ethiopian Customs Commission(ECC) at the headquarter of ECC.

The deliberations includes, among others, the need for capacity building on the rules and customs procedures for the horticulture export industry operators so as to foster due compliance, building the capacity of customs experts on the peculiar characterstics of the horticulture farms and, valuation issues, expediting release of import containers, franco-valuta, and also fostering issues that can further fuel the transformation of the horticulture industry.

Board members of EHPEA expressed their deep satisfaction on the reforms undertaken by Customs and also called for addressing remaining challenges.

Commissioner Debele on his part expressed the readiness of his office to support the industry in a proactive manner. He further reiterated the readiness of his commission to cater quality service for manufacturers and producers to catalyze the growth and competitiveness of companies operating in Ethiopia. He also called on the companies to build capacity and to comply with customs rules and regulations.

It is agreed to meet every month in a structured manner to proactively address any challenges and also to strategize the further competitiveness of the industry.

Ethiopian Cargo Visits Bishoftu Horticulture Farms

A team from Ethiopian Cargo visited horticulture farms in Bishoftu town to gain first-hand insight into sustainable, high-tech farming practices, as well as advanced packaging and storage systems supporting global exports.

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration and expand international market destinations, the team held discussions on the way forward to enhance communication and work more closely together across the value chain.

Accompanied by staff from EHPEA, the three-member Ethiopian Cargo team toured Yasin Legesse and JoyTech Farming sites, where farm managers and staff provided detailed briefings. The discussions covered the wide range of flowers, herbs, and vegetables produced, modern farming techniques, packaging and cold-storage facilities, and the international destinations served by these products.

The visit served as a valuable platform to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and reaffirm a shared commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s growing horticulture export sector.

EHPEA organized a High-Level Cold Chain Training for Floriculture Sector.

Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) in collaboration with Flower Watch, successfully organized an insightful training session focused on the latest developments in cold chain management for the floriculture sector.

The training brought together participants from various flower farms and from Ethiopian airlines, providing a unique platform for knowledge exchange and professional development.

The session covered key topics, including the most recent updates in flower logistics, lessons learned from ongoing cold chain projects in Ethiopia, strategies for cool chain optimization, and innovative approaches to tackling Botrytis fungicide resistance in roses, among other critical subjects.

This initiative reflects EHPEA’s commitment to supporting the Ethiopian floriculture industry by promoting best practices, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring global competitiveness.

EHPEA and GAIN Partner to Promote Workplace Nutrition in Horticulture Farms

EHPEA and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition(GAIN) joined hands to promote workplace nutrition in the horticulture farms. This was disclosed today at Nexus hotel.

Executive Director of EHPEA, Mr.Tewodros Zewdie, stated that work place nutrition has a multifaced benefits to workers and farms as it helps to ensure productivity and profitability in addition to ensuring wellbeing of workers.

He reiterated the readiness of EHPEA to promote workplace nutrition in close partnership with GAIN.

According to him, many horticulture farms are taking exemplary leadership in improving wage, Occupational Health and Safety(OSH) , Sexual and Reproductive Health issues, Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR), work place nutrition and etc…

GAIN interventions in Ethiopia primarily focus on to ensure better diets for children, large-scale food fortification, and reducing postharvest Loss.

EHPEA is serving as Secretary of the National private sector pillar under Ethiopian Food Systems Transformation and Nutrition(EFSTN).

EHPEA Launches Urban Agriculture Project Focused on Vertical Farming

The Ethiopian Horticulture and Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) has officially launched a new urban agriculture program titled “Vertical Farming for Young Urban Farmers under the Employee Innovation Fund Program” in partnership with The Mastercard Foundation and Digital Opportunity Trust. The initiative is designed to equip young people in urban areas with practical skills and technical knowledge in modern vertical farming systems, contributing to sustainable food production and youth employment.

The program aims to reach 600 young urban farmers, providing them with comprehensive technical guidance on vertical farming practices and supporting pathways toward employment and job creation within the horticulture sector. By promoting innovative production methods suited to limited urban spaces, the program responds to growing challenges related to land scarcity, food security, and sustainable urban development.

Vertical farming, the core focus of the program, enables crop production in stacked layers using different production technologies. This approach significantly reduces land and water use, lowers environmental footprints, and brings fresh produce closer to urban consumers, thereby minimizing transportation-related emissions.

The launch event brought together key stakeholders and partners from the horticulture and agribusiness sectors. During the event, Mr. Roy Brosh, Chief Business Officer of Joytech fresh Plc, presented advanced hydroponics vertical farming technologies, highlighting their potential to maximize productivity and resource efficiency. In addition, Ato. Dinku Desalegne, Farm Manager at Metrolux Flowers, shared practical experiences in hydroponic strawberry production, demonstrating the commercial viability and adaptability of vertical farming systems.

The event also featured active discussions and knowledge exchange among participants, reflecting strong collaboration and shared commitment to advancing urban agriculture in the city and around.

Gender-Sensitive Management Training at Dummen Orange

EHPEA held a Gender-Sensitive Management Training, at Dummen Orange, which welcomed 28 participants from top and middle management. This initiative aims to enhance awareness and equip leaders with practical skills to integrate gender-responsive approaches into their management and decision-making processes.

During the training, participants engaged in interactive sessions, discussions, and case studies that emphasized the importance of gender equality in the workplace. By fostering an inclusive environment, we can ensure diverse perspectives are valued, leading to improved team dynamics and better business outcomes.

EHPEA Promotes Urban Vertical Farming Through Innovative Horticulture Initiatives

The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) has initiated a new urban vertical farming intervention aimed at promoting horticulture-based food production in cities while building the technical and business capacity of urban farmers and interested investors. The initiative responds to the growing demand for fresh, safe, and high-quality fruits and vegetables, while supporting sustainable food systems and income generation.

Through this initiative, aimed in equipping participants particularly youth and women with practical skills in vertical horticulture farming as an efficient, affordable and scalable solution. Protected cultivation, efficient water use, quality input management, post-harvest handling, entrepreneurship, market linkages, and investment readiness are also among others anticipated initiatives.

As part of the effort, EHPEA’s technical team visited an indoor fruit and vegetable production project in Kirkos Sub-City, implemented under the Addis Ababa City Administration farmers and urban agriculture development commission piloting at Abiyot Kirs Secondary School. The visit highlighted innovative hydroponics and floating technologies that efficiently utilize limited urban space and demonstrated the potential of urban horticulture to supply fresh produce year-round while conserving land and water.

EHPEA remains committed to inclusive and sustainable horticulture development by supporting innovative urban solutions that strengthen food security, create jobs, and empower communities across Ethiopia.
